Play in the Wild! Initiations into Nonviolence offer a full-immersion education in the principles and practices of nonviolence. We define nonviolence as a lifelong commitment to seeing beyond differences, respecting all living things, and being of service to ourselves and others.
Our youth programs include Quests and Revolutions. Students in these programs learn practical and effective skills for living interdependently with all forms of life while developing knowledge of self and others. These skills and knowledge form the basis for peaceful, harmonious, and productive communities, not just at Play in the Wild!, but in the circles of relationships that the youth create after they leave our program.
Unlike most educational programs, Play in the Wild! addresses the whole learner; physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual. On any given day, our students might be camping in the backcountry of California, learning about the history of nonviolence, sharing and transforming judgments of self and other, or practicing silent mindfulness meditation. We believe that 21st century leadership requires all of these intelligences and a global mindset.
Youth who attend Play in the Wild! come from all corners of the Earth. In past years, youth have come from families in Australia, India, Morocco, Tanzania, Canada, the U.S., Japan, England, Venezuela, Wales, El Salvador, Guatemala, Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, Palestine, and St. Vincent. With this diversity of voices, curiosity, understanding, and mutual appreciation happen quite naturally at Play in the Wild!. We like to think that, at Play in the Wild!, we don’t teach empathy or celebration of differences. Instead, we create the conditions for empathy and celebration of differences to occur.
We also provide programs for families in our Community and Day Camps and for educators in our Animator Trainings. Play in the Wild! is a program of Baba Tree International, a nonprofit organization committed to advancing the lived understanding of peace and nonviolence among all peoples through providing trainings in conflict transformation, mindfulness, Nonviolent Communication, wilderness and other life-enhancing skills and through sponsoring individuals and groups, youth and adults from a diverse array of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds to participate in these trainings.
